FINALLY!
An alternative to the plague of the "Drive-By Training"!
As budgets get tighter and the need for cost-effective learning increases, new approaches to "knowledge transfer" are essential for organizations who want to focus on sustainability. Members of our training group have a strong belief that organizations simply cannot afford to allow workshop training to be where the learning process stops. And - that idea is not just a "belief". Good evidence abounds that if all you do is "throw some classroom training at people" - you will likely need to throw it at them again, and again, and again - to maintain the behaviour change that is initiated in workshops.Spraying a group of people with an onslaught of "magic bullets" - in the hope that some of them "hit"in the right places, is simply not an effective (much less cost-effective) way of doing business. That is why we created the "Practice Pieces" learning resource. It offers a practical solution to those organizations that want to move toward creating customized and sustainable "Learning System" for M.I.
The "Practice Pieces" kit contains a 2-DVD set of 12 MI interviews, each with a printed verbatim transcript of the session. The interviews are set in a variety of health care contexts (addictions, corrections, mental health, occupational therapy, tobacco cessation, diabetes education, eating disorders, domestic abuse, weight management, relationship counselling). The set can be easily customized so as to provide up to 4 additional interview examples (transcripted and coded) in any of 8 interview settings. Some of the transcripts contain "coaching or supervisors notes". Some are coded using the MITI 3.1 coding system. Others contain instructions for how individuals or groups can use the DVD examples and transcripts to look for specific "MI behaviours" or "MI principles" in action.
Our new "Practice Pieces" learning resource is provided to all participants in our newest "Peer Coaching" workshop, along with detailed training on how to use each exercise as a support for hosting a "Learning Circle" with 6 or more peers who have all had (at least) introductory-level training in MI. Peer Coaches may purchase additional workbooks for use by Learning Circle members who have not taken Peer Coaching Training, but would like to use the workbook in the group setting. Organizations who sponsor a "Peer Coaching" training session can purchase as many of these resource kits as needed, so long as they have a trained "Peer Coach" who is operating and overseeing at least one in-house Learning Circle (Community of Practice). Please give us a call, anytime, to discuss how we might help to customize a "Practice Pieces" resource kit for your organization and to train a group of Peer Coaches who can launch a self-directed Community of Practice to aid in the achievement of your MI learning goals.
